Traffic Week aims at reducing accidents in the City of Três Lagoas (MS)

II Semana Municipal de Trânsito ("2nd Municipal Traffic Week") of the City of Três Lagoas, launched on April 23, is an initiative developed by the Municipal Government of Três Lagoas and counts of the support of VCP. The goal is to contribute to decrease the number of accidents in the city.
"Três Lagoas is undergoing a great change, which impacts not only the economy of the city, but also the traffic. There is a higher number of vehicles circulating in the city, which demands more attention from the population", says Chief of the Traffic Education Division in Três Lagoas, Creusa Ramos Monteiro Ferreira.
The challenge of the Traffic Week is to reduce the number of accidents in Três Lagoas to zero. Thus, the Municipal Government and VCP will perform a series of actions from April 23 to 27, with the support of the Traffic Education Division in Três Lagoas of the Municipal Office of Management, Industry, Trading and Tourism; Municipal Office of Education and Culture; the State and Federal Military Police; the State Agency of Management and Undertakings of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul (Agesul), the Fire Brigade, Detran and International Paper.
A campaign called Direção Certa ("Right Direction") was developed focusing on raising population’s awareness on the importance of being more careful in the traffic. Billboards, folders and radio spots with tips to drive safely and avoid accidents and infractions were created. "The campaign is well tempered and brings strong messages to draw drivers, cyclists and motorcyclists’ attention", says the Chief of the Traffic Education Division in Três Lagoas, Creusa Ramos Monteiro Ferreira.
The campaign mainly focuses on motorcyclists and cyclists. As an example, the number of accidents with motorcycles involved was 757 in 2007, versus 534 recorded in 2006. Regarding bicyclists, occurrences increased from 148 to 166 last year. Only during the first three months of 2008, there were 199 accidents involving motorcycles and 45 involving bicycles. In the same period of 2007, 126 and 37 were recorded, respectively.
In addition to the communication, there will be interventions named Blitz do Bem ("Good Blitz"), at the main crossroads of Três Lagoas on April 24, 25 and 26. At the time, police officers and firefighters will approach the population to give tips on safe driving.
In 2007, Três Lagoas recorded 1,188 traffic accidents, six of which with fatal victims. In the previous year, 953 cases were recorded. In the first quarter of 2008 alone, the city recorded 316 accidents.
The launch of II Semana Municipal de Trânsito in Três Lagoas will count on the participation of local authorities, in addition to representatives of VCP and International Paper. At the time, the Chief of the Traffic Education Division will present the campaign and its goals.
