In October, the Project Cinturão Verde (Green Belt) of the mill of Resende of Votorantim Siderurgy completed the planting of 25% of the cuttings which will form the Permanent Protection Areas (APP) and Forestry Reserves around the mill. The project will be ended in May, 2009 after planting over 200 thousand cuttings occupying an area equivalent to 33% of the land where the steel mill is being built. The Project emerged from an environmental study performed by VS during the process for obtaining the license for the construction of the new production unit and its major objective is to recover degraded areas which existed in the land where the unit is being built. However, VS is doing more: besides the reforestation of the marginal protection strips (APP) of wellsprings which cross the mill land, an environmental reserve within the company land will also be created. Seventy-five native species of the region between Serra do Mar and Serra da Mantiqueira, the place where the new mill is located, have been chosen to occupy the area of 141 hectares proposed by the project. Until October, 50 thousand cuttings have already been planted, starting the recovery process of the margins.
