Conteúdo:
Votorantim Cement informs that – from this Monday, September 22nd, the Itaú de Minas factory, located in southern Minas Gerais, resumes its maximum capacity operation. The unit, which accounts for provisioning the northern region of the state of São Paulo, had been producing at partial pace in the past weeks due to a scheduled stoppage for mill maintenance. From today on, it resumes full production in three shifts, seven days a week, totalizing 7,500 tons of cement/day.

To meet the huge internal demand for the product in this region and throughout the country, Votorantim Cement has taken some steps:

Export cement shipments have been called off, prioritizing national provisioning;

Regulating stock have been considerably reduced, distributing all of the existing production at the cement factories to its customers (these regulating stocks aim to keep market provisioned in the case of factory maintenance);

Operational logistics has been re-adequated aiming to improve product distribution efficiency and send cement from a factory to production-distant consuming regions.

It is worth pointing out that – in spite of the increase in demand - Votorantim Cement has kept prices unchanged at the plant gate, keeping the same values as in April, 2008. The price increases which occurred in some cases were seen at the distribution chain due to higher demand.

In addition to these immediate-effected actions, the company has announced the biggest investment plan in the Country’s cement industry history: R$ 3.2 billion are being applied in 12 new factories and mills, re-activations, and modernization of existing plants. Altogether, Votorantim Cement will have a 60% increase in its production capacity in Brazil by 2011, leaping from 25 to 39 million tons a year.

The expansion plan has so far comprised reactivations of the factories in Pinheiro Machado/RS, Cocalzinho/GO, and Poty Paulista/PE. The inaugurations of mills in Barcarena/PA and Pecém/CE, the factory modernizations in Santa Helena/SP, Itaú de Minas/MG, Sobradinho/DF, and Rio Branco do Sul/PR – in addition to the beginning of the construction works for the factories in Xambioá/TO, Vidal Ramos/SC, Sepetiba/RJ, Porto Velho/RO, and Baraúna-RN, and production line expansion at the Salto/SP and Nobres/MT units.

Conteúdo:
Votorantim Cement, leader in the national cement market, is one of the exhibitors of Feiron 2008 (Fair of the Industry of the State of Rondônia) that takes place on 28 and 31 August, in Porto Velho/RO.

During the event, the company will present the project of the cement factory of Porto Velho, that will start operating in 2009. The investment of R$ 110 million in the new unit was announced in 2007 and it is part of the plans of the company for increasing the production capacity – in the whole are being injected R$ 3.2 billion for the construction, enlargement and modernization of factories in the whole national territory.

The unit will have capacity to produce 750 thousand tons of cement a year and it will be responsible for supplying the markets of Rondônia, Acre and Amazon, in addition to supplying cement for the works of the hydroelectric power stations that will be built in Rio Madeira. The new unit will generate 750 workstations during the works and 250 direct and indirect jobs when operating.

Co-processing

The new cement production unit that will be built in Porto Velho will count with an environmental technology related to the use of industrial garbage as secondary source for powering the factory. It is the co-processing, an internationally consecrated technology that makes possible the destruction of industrial residues (mainly old tires) under high temperatures in cement ovens properly licentiates for this end. The technology is used by Votorantim Cement since 1990 to reduce the dependence on fossil fuel (bun of petroleum, in the case of Votorantim Cement) and for the preservation of non renewable natural resources. It is considered a friendlier environmental alternative for the responsible industries, since that it allows for significant reduction in gas emissions arising from the greenhouse effect.

That procedure is practiced in accordance with the regulation Conama 264/99, a law that defines the strict control of the atmospheric emissions in such a way to not commit the quality of the produced cement nor the health of the employees working in the factories and the contour population. According to the legislation, residues can be processed from practically all the industrial segments, such as metallurgy, petro-chemistry, automobile, metal, paint, packing, paper and tires.

Nowadays, 10 factories of Votorantim Cement carry through the co-processing: Rio Branco do Sul (PR), Cantagalo (RJ), Sobral (CE), Nobres (MT), Itaú de Minas (MG), Sobradinho (DF), Cipasa (PB), Pinheiro Machado (RS), Corumbá (MS) and Salto (SP). Just in 2007, the company achieved a record volume of about 400 thousand tons, practically the half of the mean co-processed volume in Brazil of approximately 800 thousand tons (that, in its turn, is equal to 30% of the total of industrial garbage produced annually in the Country).

The activity is part of Votorantim Cements' commitment with the sustainable development of its businesses. The company is recognized in Brazil and abroad for the investments in environmental programs and development of new technologies for reducing carbon gas emissions.

Cement is provisioned by the Salto de Pirapora and Santa Helena's Plants, located in the Sorocaba region. Other products, such as mortar, grouting, and lime are originally from other units of the company, such as Itupeva, Barueri, and Cajamar. The new DC will chiefly serve the Campinas region, as well as nearly 50 other cities up to 150 kilometers away from the location.

The Campinas DC now encompasses the new distribution model by using a new freight carrier with new, trucks with logo, and a delivery team its own. The objective is to ensure – in addition to speed – efficiency and quality at serving the customers throughout the region. With this new structure, Votorantim Cementos plans to optimize product distribution to this important market.

The constructed area is 4 thousand m², located in a 25-thousand-m² terrain, with a storage shed for 5 thousand tons and capacity for loading more than 1.5 thousand trucks a month, with an average 18-ton-a-month shipping. The DC patio will count on a 15-thousand-m² green area near the Casa do Caminhoneiro (Truck Driver's Home), a specific living space for cargo vehicle drivers offering men's and ladies' rooms with hot-water shower, diaper room, TV room, recreation room, and snack bar.

Votorantim Cimentos currently operates with 68 product shipping points to serve construction retailers all over the Country. By the end of the year, the company must inaugurate new Distribution and Trading Centers aiming to bring the brand closer and closer to both sales channels and end consumers.

Conteúdo:
With its focus on fitting the young into the labor market – Programa Futuro em Nossas Mãos [The Future-in-Our-Hands Program] offered by Votorantim Cement and Votorantim Institute – having started last June 4th in Rio de Janeiro, can already rely on the partnership between companies Brascan Imobiliária and Navele Engenharia, which will hire course-formed bricklayers.

Votorantim Cement, the Votorantim Institute, and partners SindusconRJ (Construction Union of Rio de Janeiro), SECONCI (Construction Industry Social Service), Community Action NGO, and SENAI expect to count on the adherence of other constructors in their partner network until course completion by the two groups (of 25 students each) taking the course in Rio. For adherence, companies must fill in a registration form on website www.futuroemnossasmaos.com.br.

The bricklayer course will last three months. It is 200 hours divided into theoretical and practical classes to be taught at Vila do João Community, in the Complexo da Maré (Tide Complex), Northern Zone of Rio.

Seeking professional formation of young people between 18 and 24 years old, the course allows developing skills and competences required by civil construction, in addition to Labor Quality and Safety norms and procedures. In addition to technical guidance, students also receive labor market directioning and differentiated contents on citizenship and enterprising.

Future in Our Hands
Convinced that investing in the young's transformation power today guarantees the future, Votorantim Cement invests more than R$ 6 million a year in social actions targeting educating and fitting the social-vulnerability-situation young into the labor market. For the Future in Our Hands Program more than R$ 1.8 million will be destined in 2008.

Future in Our Hands professionally qualifies young people between 18 and 24 years old for the civil construction labor market. The program is a result of the strategic cooperation between Votorantim Cement and the Votorantim Institute. The initiative has existed since 2003, having already formed more than 8 thousand young people in all of the country's regions.

The Program's main objective is professional qualification by means of partnerships with internationally renowned entities (such as SENAI and CEFET), also allowing recognition and legitimacy for autonomous work. In addition to the professional formation, the program supplies a basic-tool kit (safety glasses, PVC gloves, plummet, bubble leveling, aluminum square, planer, and tape measure) to be used during training and make it easy for these young people to enter the market.

Through partnerships, Votorantim Cement expects to collaborate to place at least 50% of the students in the labor market. They also participate in activities approaching such themes as ethics, citizenship, rights & duties, work, and enterprising, which grant them additional preparation for the challenges the labor market offers. Such contents are part of the module called Common Core, with a 32-hour load.

Since 2007, the course's practical share is carried out at the community where the young recruited students. They have the opportunity to develop practical training contributing the development of a social work to their own community (nursery school or classroom reform), a change-of-life opportunity history with professional qualification.

Registrations for the program are made by the partner NGOs' (Non-Governmental Organizations') articulators active in these communities, with proven experience in social projects targeting the young at this age range. The responsible NGO, the region's SENAI, and Votorantim Cement make the final young people final selection together. Each group is formed by 25 students.

Conteúdo: Votorantim Cement empowers 50 young bricklayers today for the civil construction market, by means of the Future in Our Hands Program, offered in Guarulhos (SP). It is worth pointing out that, from the 50 youngsters being empowered today, 25 are already employed and 19 are taking part in selection processes for new opportunities.
Such program was set up in 2003 at Votorantim Cement and, in 2005, it started to rely on the technical support of Instituto Votorantim. Above 7.9 thousand professionals have been empowered since the beginning of the program. The Futuro em Nossas Mãos (Future in Our Hands) Program will, over 2008, empower another one thousand young professionals throughout the Country.

The Program will have a 250-hour duration, that is, 58 hours more than the program basic grid, which offers 192 hours/class. The classes are divided into various modules, of which the Technical module is the longest one. The Program still provides theoretical and practical hands-on classes focused on the specific skills and competencies of the civil construction, and the empowerment in Quality and Safety standards and procedures.

Futuro em Nossas Mãos

Votorantim Cement is convinced that the investment in the transforming power of the youth today ensures their future, and invests above R$ 6 million a year in social actions directed to the education and insertion of low-income youngsters in the labor market. In 2008, above R$ 1.8 million will be allocated to the Futuro em Nossas Mãos Program.

The Futuro em Nossas Mãos professionally qualifies youngsters aged between 18 and 24 years for the civil construction labor market. The program results from the strategic cooperation between Votorantim Cement and Instituto Votorantim (Votorantim Institute). This exists since 2003, and has already educated above 7 thousand people in all of the Country’s regions.

The purpose of the Program is to provide professional education for, and to assist, the youngsters in entering the labor market.

Votorantim Cement expects to contribute – through partnerships – to placing at least 50% of the students in the labor market. The youngsters also participate in activities dealing with subject matters such as: ethics, citizenship, rights and duties, work and entrepreneurship, what confers upon them an additional preparation for the labor market challenges. These contents are a constituent part of the module called Common Core, with a workload of 32 hours.

Registrations can be made in the municipalities where the Program is performed, with the partnering technical schools. These are also responsible for the student selection, in association with NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations), and local labor unions. Each group contains 25 students.

In addition to the professional education the program also contemplates - upon the course completion - handing a basic tool kit (safety goggles, PVC gloves, plumb, bubble level, aluminum square, trowel, mason’s float, and measuring tape) in order to make it easier for these professional youngsters to enter the labor market.

Conteúdo: Votorantim Cement merges the operations of another company in the United States and intensifies its international activities. The company announces the acquisition of Prairie, one of the largest concrete and aggregate companies in the Middle West of the United State, whose sales result was US$483 million and EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) was U$44 million in 2007.

Headquartered in Chicago, Prairie operates in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin in the Greak Lakes region, with 81 concrete centers and 17 mines of aggregates, in addition to deposits and trucks for transporting materials. In 2007, the company produced and traded, in the United States, 5 million m3 of concrete and 6.5 million tons of aggregates. It has nearly 1,800 employees and more than 1,150 concrete mixer trucks.

The company is already a customer of Votorantim Cement and purchases more than 60% of the cement produced at the Dixon unit (Illinois). Prairie’s activities will be merged to the assets of the company’s subsidiary in North America, VCNA – Votorantim Cement North America, and operated jointly with St Marys Cement, company headquartered in Toronto (Canada) and acquired by Votorantim Cement in 2001, year which market the beginning of Votorantim Group’s internationalization.

Votorantim Cement’s CEO Walter Schalka says that merging Prairie’s assets represents a strategic step to the consolidation of Votorantim Cement in the North-American market. “The Great Lakes are a strategic region for the company. With such an acquisition, our leading position in the market shall be strengthened – we currently have a nearly 30% market share. The acquisition also means extending the company’s operations in the entire production chain of the industry of cement, concrete and aggregates in the region, bringing synergies and gains of scale”, says the officer.

Currently, Votorantim owns six cement production plants in the region: St Marys and Bowmanville, in Ontario, Canada; Charlevoix (Michigan), Detroit (Michigan), Dixon (Illinois) and Badger (Wisconsin). The company also controls many concrete centers and aggregate operations, in addition to managing a logistics system with six ships and 12 cement terminals. With such a structure, the company holds a nearly 30% share in the cement, concrete and aggregate market in the Great Lakes. Votorantim Cement’s businesses in Florida – a cement plant (Suwannee, in Branford) and concrete operations (Trinity Materials and Prestige, the latter acquired in October 2007), in addition to a new plant under construction (Sumter) – represent a 15% share in the local market. Votorantim Cement also announces the construction of a new cement unit in Houston (Georgia), which should be ready in 2010. The plant’s production capacity will be 900,000 tons per year.

“Currently, international businesses already account for 30% of Votorantim Cement’s sales results. Our goal is to increase the global share by means of new clusters in strategic regions and the verticalization of operations, focusing on operating on the entire chain of basic building material. The strategy is to pursue the balance of assets among developed and emerging markets, minimizing impacts both from exchange variations and regional volatilities”, concludes Schalka.

Prairie
Year of foundation: 1948
2007 sales results: US$483 million (estimate)
EBITDA in 2007: US$44 million (estimate)
Market share: Leader in the Middle West of the United States
Production: Concrete – 5 million m3/year
Aggregates – 6.5 million tons/year
Operations: 81 concrete centers and 17 aggregate mines
Markets: States of Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin
Employees: Approximately 1,800 peoples
Assets: More than 1,150 concrete mixer trucks

Conteúdo: Votorantim Cement’ Evoluir Program (Evolution Program) will reach out to new towns starting in 2008. The company will invest R$ 1.3 million to start training young people in mechanics, electricity and electroelectronics in Itaú de Minas (MG), Baraúna (RN), Cantagalo (RJ) and Vidal Ramos (SC), besides a new group to be established at Xambioá (TO). In 2008, expectations are to train another 98 youngsters out of the groups started in 2007

The courses, offered together with the Votorantim Institute and Professional training institutions, usually take one year and a half, with a total of 1,232 hours/classes split into two training nuclei. Besides the technical nucleus, dedicated to Mechanical and Electric Industrial Maintenance, there is also the citizenship nucleus, with socio-educative activities geared to the personal, community, professional and ethical development of the young participants.

To take part, the young must live in the communities where the company operates; they must have time availability for the classes; they must be high school graduates; they should not be enrolled with or have concluded college or another course of a technical level; they must be 18 to 24 years old; and they must prove a family income of up to one minimum wage per head.

With the program, while Votorantim Cement offers the young the chance of Professional training and access to the first job, it also tries to solve the hurdle arising from hiring professionals in regions with precarious infrastructures in which it has productive units. The company strategy in this case is to set up the project even before the plants start working.

When a Votorantim Cement unit is established in a Brazilian town, many things change around it. The first one is the wish that life in the community will evolve with the company. A good example of this is the new Xambioá (TO) plant, expected to start operating in 2009. When it is in full gear, the Xambioá unit will have 32 Electronics professionals from the program concluded in 2008. Moreover, the new plant may have another group of 25 young with a Mechanics grade that is scheduled to start in February 2008 and whose screening process is set for January.

In the municipality of Cantagalo (RJ), the first step of the Evoluir Program will start next year. Together with the Cenecista Santa Mônica College, two 25-student groups will start a technical training in Mechanics and Electricity. Once they graduate, they may work in the local plant.

With more than 20 years of existence, the Evoluir Program is a successful initiative. In 2007 alone, 167 young people graduated in the units of Sobradinho (DF), Nobres (MT) and Corumbá (MS). The towns that are now being the object of actions for the first time are Xamioá (TO), Laranjeiras (SE) and Caaporã (PB).

Social Investment
Convinced that investing in the transformation power of the young in the present guarantees the future, Votorantim Cement is pouring another R$ 6 million a year in social actions geared to the education and inclusion of low-income young people in the labor market.

Among corporate programs, it is worth mentioning Future in Our Hands, which professionally qualifies people from 18 to 24 years old for the civil architecture market. Over the last four years, this program has already trained in excess of seven thousand people in all regions of the country.

Contato: Flavio Luis Paes - Nuova

Conteúdo:
São Paulo, September 5, 2007 – As of this month, TV and radio stations will broadcast the advertising campaign “Veja Bem [Well, You See]”, created by Talent for Votorantim Cement. The campaign is part of a strategy by the company to reinforce the brand’s solidity, which has 70 years of tradition.

The partnership with Talent, started this year, brought as a first result a good-humored campaign, showing that the choice of Votorantim Cement’s brands does not need explanations. It was from this concept that the character “Veja Bem” was created, protagonist of the adverts.

As a national campaign, the adverts include films, ads and sales outlet materials, made according to the region of broadcast. The reason for this decision is in Votorantim Cement’s model of operation in Brazil, which is according to regional brands. They are: Votoran (South and Southeast regions), Itaú (Midwest region, interior of São Paulo and Minas Gerais), Tocantins (Goiás, Federal District and Tocantins) and Poty (Northeast region).

The “Veja Bem” campaign

In the first stage of the campaign, “Veja Bem” is a clumsy “professional”, famous for trying to justify himself each time he is asked why he does not choose Votorantim Cement’s products. He then talks with the foreman, always using the “well, you see” rationale to try to justify the wrong choice.

The concept “Cement: ou você compra bem ou veja bem... [you either buy well or well, you see…]” will be common to all the adverts, with focus on the regional brand according to the broadcasting location or brand exhibition.

With this strategy, Votorantim Cement explores the differentials of its product: quality and reliability. “We are always investing in surveys to understand the needs of our customers and consumers, and thus provide a quality product, with differentiated services and attendance”, states Marcelo Chamma, Commercial Director of Votorantim Cement.

The campaign foresees the creation of several films, always with the idea of the character “Veja Bem” interacting with the people involved in the construction world, be it the bricklayer, storekeeper or final consumer.

The films are scheduled to be broadcast on the following TV stations: Rede Globo, Rede TV! And Rede Bandeirantes. Spots will be broadcast in more than 300 radio stations. There will be a sales outlet work in stores throughout Brazil, with the aim of bringing the character closer to the public.

“Votorantim Cement's production expansion project, with new integrated plants and mills, in addition to modernization of already existing plants, is in line with the strategy to maintain the historical growth standard of the Votorantim Group and keep up with a new growth cycle of civil construction in Brazil", states Walter Schalka, president of the company.

Conteúdo:
Developed by Votorantim Cement, votomassa maxifachada is a pioneer in the Northeastern market. The new mortar waives the traditional mixture of cement, sand and lime, and can receive painting and ceramics directly, which implies in cost reduction of the works.

The product, especially created for the façade of buildings, will be supplied in 50-kilo bags and simplifies the operation of preparation and transporting the mortar in the worksite.

Another benefit found is the ease in managing stocks and controlling the service by the construction companies, resulting in better organization in the works. According to Marcelo Lass, responsible for Votorantim Cement’s mortar business unit, the civil construction market is evolving rapidly toward an industrialized construction, demanding goods that provide maximum productivity in the worksites and with adequate technology for each type of use.

To meet the demand, VC focuses the research investments in expanding the Votomassa line. Votomassa maxifachada spent four months in the development phase in the company’s research center, underwent field tests and is being produced by Cipasa, VC industrial unit in Paraíba.

The idea of Votorantim Cement is to extend the sale of votomassa maxifachada to other regions of the country where the brand is already sold. Initially, the product will be available in the states of Pernambuco, Alagoas, Rio Grande do Norte and Paraíba. In Brazil, use of the industrialized mortar is greater in the states in the Southern and Southeastern regions.

Executives from the Votorantim Group analyze, however, that the consumption is still small when compared to other countries of Europe and North America. For them, the new line of mortars will bring changes in the management of the production of construction companies due to the quality and cost reductions.

CCRG’s shares were purchased for the blanket price of about R$ 425 million, amount to be paid during the course of six years. According to the president of Votorantim Cement, Walter Schalka, the purchase meets the need of the company to expand its production capacity in view of the perspective of growth in the economy. “The cement market in Brazil must always be evaluated in the medium and long term. In this context, the Votorantim group believes in the growth of this industry and it believes that the economic scenario and government drives are favorable, especially in the Southeast region. In light of this, the Votorantim Group saw CCRG’s purchase as an excellent investment opportunity”, states Schalka.

CCRG will enable Votorantim Cement to expand its production by 900 thousand tons/year. Today, Votorantim Cement’s production capacity is 30.4 million tons/year of cement.

This purchase is the result of negotiations started in the end of August 2006, when the Votorantim Group manifested its interest to acquire CCRG’s control.

Conteúdo:
Votorantim’s Local Memory exhibition will be taking place next Wednesday, the 6th of December, at Aquário Cultural Claudir Calixto Mainardi. The exhibition will bring to the public illustrations and texts made by children, youngsters and teachers who researched the history of the municipality through the Memória Local na Escola [Local Memory in School] project. The project, an initiative of Votorantim Cement, in partnership with Instituto Museu da Pessoa and support from Instituto Avisa Lá, was developed with the Votorantim Municipal Government through the Municipal Education Secretariat in municipal public schools.

The project aims at recovering the municipality’s history through the oral memory of the oldest dwellers, in addition to encouraging the practice of reading and writing, and supporting digital inclusion of the children and youngsters who took part in the project. The opening ceremony will take place at 2 pm, with the presence of Marcelo Monteiro (manager of the Santa Helena/Salto plant), Carlos Augusto Pivetta (secretary of education of Itapeva), Cisele Ortiz (Coordinator of Museu da Pessoa’s projects) and Jair Cassola (Mayor of Votorantim).

The exhibition, which will be free of charge and open to the entire community, will take place between the 6th and 15th of December, from 2 pm to 5 pm, at Aquário Cultural Claudir Calixto Mainardi, Rua Moacir Oseas Guitte, No. 41 [address]. Visitors will be able to appreciate the exhibition, which portrays the history of Votorantim through narrations by the region’s dwellers.

“We were very satisfied with the project’s results, which allows the region’s youngsters to understand the importance of recovering the city’s history”, explains Marcelo Monteiro, manager of the Salto and Santa Helena Units. “The exhibition will be able to take to the entire community the result of this initiative, which values the local culture, in addition to contributing toward the professional training of the region’s youngsters”, concludes the executive.

The Local Memory in School project, which lasted nine months, involved 15 municipal elementary schools. In all, 44 teachers and 840 youngsters aged 8 and 10 years took part in the project. The initiative was also supported by Museu da Pessoa, specialized in historical documentation of companies and regions and by Instituto Avisa Lá, which was responsible for the pedagogical development of the program.

The project consists of the holding of theoretical and practical classes on historical documentation, in which the students learn and conduct surveys, interview sources, organize files, write texts for recording, take and catalogue photographs, among other activities.

At the end of the work, three products will be created to disseminate Votorantim’s history among the other dwellers: itinerant exhibition of materials gathered from the region’s schools and publics spaces; books or albums with the written and photographic record of the municipality; and a book developed by the teachers working in the project, which will narrate the pedagogic part and processes of the work used, as a way of making eternal and disseminating the knowledge acquired with Museu da Pessoa and Instituto Avisa Lá.

With this initiative, Votorantim seeks to contribute toward developing the local memory of the Votorantim (São Paulo State) and Itapeva (São Paulo State) and São Miguel Paulista communities (São Paulo district home to the Votorantim Cement, Votorantim Metals, Votorantim Chemicals and Votorantim Pulp and Paper Units).

Conteúdo:
Votorantim Cements is leading one of the boldest social inclusion projects promoted by the private sector, the program “Future in Our Hands”. In Ceará, the project is being conducted in the cities of Fortaleza and Sobral, and the program intends to empower, this year, over 120 youngsters for the job market. In August, 45 students from the first groups concluded the course, which started in June, and four new groups started this month, with about 76 youngsters, who will receive the certificate of conclusion in December. The aim is to empower them for civil construction this year, throughout Brazil, a universe of 1.6 thousand youngsters, aged 18 to 24 years.

In addition to professional training, the youngsters receive at the end of the Masonry, Tile Settling and Sealing course a tool kit (safety goggles, PVC gloves, plumb line, spirit level, aluminum square, trowel, leveler and tapeline) to facilitate entry of these professional youngsters in the market. To complete the training, they have lectures on safety and the environment, which are ministered by volunteers.

The project was developed in a strategic cooperation by Votorantim Cements and the Votorantim Institute, in partnership with SENAI [National Industrial Education Service], with participation of Sinduscon [Civil Construction Industry Union].It also has the partnership of several social promotion entities throughout the country.Votorantim Cement is responsible for the project’s general coordination. In Sobral (Ceará State), the project is being implemented with Senai and the State Government.

“Usually, at the start of his career, the professional must make loans to buy tools and enter the market”, recalls Marcelo Chamma, commercial director of Votorantim Cements.“Quoting a popular saying, with this project, we not only teach how to fish, we provide the fishing rod, the bait and the hook”, he concludes. With the support of partners, Votorantim Cements hopes to promote the introduction of at least 70% of the students in the job market.

“Future in Our Hands”, which started in 2003, has already passed through 66 cities throughout Brazilian territory and has benefited 6,000 new professionals with over 300 graduated groups. This year, the project is taking place in 29 municipalities, from 11 States, and involves Votorantim Cement, Votorantim Metals, CBA and Votorantim Pulp and Paper, all business units of the Votorantim Group. The program has already received the following awards: Top Anamaco, Sodexho Pass, 2004 Good Citizenship Guide, and was Case in the Youth and Work Seminar (Pernambuco State) and in the BAWB Conference (Business as Agent of World Benefit).

Ethics and entrepreneurship are part of the curriculum

The Masonry and Sealing course last 192 hours, divided into three modules. The longest is the Technical module, which has over 160 hours. In it, the students get acquainted with the products and technologies existing in the market and are prepared for the activities of masonry settler and coater.

One of the project’s differentials is the Entrepreneurship and Interpersonal Relations module. The youngsters receive directions to facilitate their entry in the job market, such as tips for presentation and expression in job interviews, in addition to notions on how to deal with the various people involved in the works, like subordinates, partners, heads and customers.Although present in all modules, ethics and citizenship are the object of a specific training.

“The course will guarantee a differentiated training of the youngsters, empowering them not just technically for professional practice, but also awakening in them the sense of citizenship, concern with environmental cleanliness, their rights and duties as a citizen and a professional, which will differentiate them from the stereotype that involves today’s civil construction worker”, Chamma concludes.

Conteúdo:
Votorantim aims to be recognized by society as a company which generates social and environmental value and this commitment is stated in its Vision and Sustainability Principles. The Business Units are pledged to undertake continuous initiatives to preserve natural resources and reduce the impacts of their activities on the environment. Votorantim Industrial, for example, works actively with the Business Units in projects which create carbon credits, thereby helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.

Check out some of the Group actions.

CITROVITA
Waste becomes a fertilizer
Citrovita has developed a project which will transform iodine, a solid waste from the treatment of industrial waste, into fertilizer. The initiative brings advantage, such as the integrated production concept as it closes the field-industry cycle and cuts costs at two points: firstly, by eliminating the costs of the final disposal of the material, and secondly by using it as a fertilizer in the orange groves. The next stage is to register the product with the Ministry of Agriculture.

VOTORANTIM CEMENT
World example
VC is part of the Cement Sustainability Initiative, an organization which brings together the largest cement companies in the world to discuss sustainability in the sector. VC has pledged to reduce its carbon emissions, amongst other initiatives. The goal was to reduce the emissions by 10% by 2012 compared with the volume of carbon issued in 1990. However, VC had already reduced the net emission by 16.6% by 2007 and is now the cement company which emits the least carbon in the world.

VOTORANTIM CHEMICALS
Recycling
The Nitro Química plant in Santa Catarina state (Brazil), has undertaken two actions which are worth noting: it is replacing diesel oil and grease by biodegradable degreasing material and reusing a solid waste as a raw material in the production of red ceramic.

VOTORANTIM METALS
Environmental management at CBA
One of VM's main projects in the environmental area is its management plan for the Morro Grande Nature Reserve. CBA worked with the Environmental Monitoring Center of Serra do Itapety to map 363 species of plants, 124 of birds, 20 of mammals and 1,319 of insects, in an area covering 425 hectares of the Atlantic Rainforest biome belonging to the company, between the towns of Poços de Caldas and Caldas (Minas Gerais state, Brazil). VM is also operating on a number of others fronts including capturing and treating waste and recycling industrial waste.

VOTORANTIM ENERGY
Preservation
Votorantim's Energy environmental initiatives include two outstanding initiatives. Two million seedlings will be planted by the end of the year in its 31 plants. These include 2,000 threatened species in the Barra Grande region located between the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. VE also looks after 28,000 hectares of native Atlantic Rainforest along the banks of the river Juquiá in São Paulo state.

VOTORANTIM STEEL
Environmental Awareness
The Votorantim Steel plant at Resende (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) has started to create a green belt around its premises and is also working to recover riverbank woodlands. By 2010, around 250,000 seedlings of Atlantic rainforest species will be planted in an area covering 140 hectares (or 1,400,000 square meters). The aim is to capture carbon from the atmosphere, reduce the risks of erosion to the riverbanks and recover biodiversity.

To reinforce the awareness of the role of each employee in relation to environmental issues, VS organized an Environment Week in the offices and plants in Brazil, Argentina and Colombia at the beginning of June. The event was held to mark World Environment Day (June 5). The initiatives involved around 5,000 employees and their families.

VCP
Carbon tracked
VCP's production plant of Jacareí (São Paulo State, Brazil) was certified in April by Carbon Footprint which measures the issues of gas in the various production process stages. It is the first pulp plant in Brazil to have this certification for the whole productive chain, from the planting of the wood to the delivery of the pulp at the ports (Europe, Asia and US).

Conteúdo:
Votorantim Cement has inaugurated its production plant at the Aratu Industrial Complex in the town of Candeias in Bahia state. The event was attended by representatives of the local authorities, the construction segment and Votorantim shareholders and executives.

The new Aratu plant was the result of an investment of R$ 50 million and will produce cement and mortar to meet the growing demand in the metropolitan region of the capital of Bahia, Salvador. The project is part of an extensive production capacity expansion program which Votorantim Cement is undertaking until 2011. The program involves investments of more than R$ 2 billion for the construction of new plants throughout Brazil, as well as the reactivation, expansion and modernization of the existing plants.

As the operations began less than a year ago, the plant is still in the learning curve period. It has produced 40% of its capacity of Votomassa brand mortar and Matrix brand adhesive. The plant has already met its annual expectation and produced 320,000 tons of cement. It is worth noting that it is the only VC plant to produce Aratu cement, a brand which is highly regarded in Bahia.

This new plant will strengthen Votorantim Cement´s presence in the Northeast, particularly the Bahia market, and allow the company to attend clients in the region more flexibly. It is located in an area measuring 370,000 square meters and the company is proud that 70% of the total area contains preserved native woodland.
