In order to honour its commitment to reduce the impacts of its activities, the Business Units in the Votorantim Group adopted the concepts of Cleaner Production and eco-efficiency initiatives, using fewer natural resources, recycling and protecting biodiversity.
Votorantim Group is a founding member of GHG Protocol in Brazil, whose target is to encourage voluntary management of GHG emissions and publish an annual emissions inventory. In 2009, the Group along with 20 other companies signed a joint Open Letter to Brazil, whereby it commits to expand the inventory base in third parties’ production chain.
The efficiency in thermal and electrical energy is a key operation premise and the Program for Energy Efficiency, adopted by the Group since 2006, became an example of responsible use of natural resources.
In parallel with the adoption of these measures, the Business Units develop environmental education projects for internal and external audiences. One example is the Environmental Living Center (Centro de Vivência Ambiental - CVA) in Alumínio (São Paulo), whose activities are directed toward students and inhabitants of the region.
In 2010, Votorantim Industrial invested R$ 310 million in initiatives related to reforestation, environmental management and education, wastewater, emissions and waste management. The amount earmarked for Capex projects represented 53% of the total invesment.
