Votorantim Cement is one of the world’s ten largest producers of cement, concrete and aggregates. The company boasts plants in Brazil, USA, Canada, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Portugal. It is a leader in the Brazilian cement market with 20.7 million tons a year.
Its operations started in 1936 in Votorantim (SP). With the acquisition of the Canadian company St. Marys Cement in 2001, it started operating outside of Brazil also. In 2008, Votorantim Cement reinforced its position as a global player acquiring 15.2% share of Cementos Bío Bío S.A., the leading company in the Chilean market.
Relevant investments have been directed toward expanding production capacity and increasing the supply of products and services in Brazil. In 2009, VC in Brazil completed its expansion projects through the startup of its integrated plants at Xambioá (Tocantins State) and Porto Velho (Rondonia State), besides its new pozolana kin at Nobres (Mato Grosso State). For 2010, the company expects to open two new production plants at Vidal Ramos (Santa Catarina State) and Sepetiba (Rio de Janeiro State). A new factory at Baraúna (Rio Grande do Norte) is scheduled to go on stream in 2011.
In Brazil, VC is a pioneer in the use of co-processing, a production technology that eliminates industrial waste in cement kilns in an economical, efficient and environmentally friendly way. This, added to some other practices, has lead VC to be recognized as one of the companies with the smallest amount of carbon emission (627 kilograms per ton of cement produced) among the cement companies participating in the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI), a forum that includes the main cement companies worldwide willing to promote sustainability in the sector.
