Its operations began in 1936 in Votorantim (SP). With the acquisition of the Canadian company St. Marys Cement in 2001, it began its operations outside of Brazil. In 2008 it reinforced its position as a global player with the purchase of a 15.2% position in Cementos Bío Bío S.A., the leading company in the Chilean market.

Relevant investments have been directed toward expanding production capacity and increasing the supply of products and services in Brazil. Two new cement factories (Xambioá, Tocantins, and Porto Velho, Rondônia), and another pozzolan kiln (Nobres, Mato Grosso) began operations in 2009; in 2010 we expect to conclude another mill (Sepetiba, Rio de Janeiro) and a cement factory (Vidal Ramos, Santa Catarina); and in 2011 another factory will be finished (Baraúna, Rio Grande do Norte).

In Brazil, VC is a pioneer in the use of co-processing, which is production technology that eliminates industrial waste in cement kilns in an economical, efficient and environmentally correct manner. Because of this and other practices, VC is recognized as one of the companies that emits the least amount of carbon (627 kilos per ton of cement produced) from among the cement companies that comprise the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI), a forum that combines the principal cement companies throughout the world seeking to promote sustainability in the sector.
