Votorantim Energia (VE) integrates and oversees all Votorantim Group’s energy self-production operations. Boasting 2,286 MW of installed capacity at 32 hydroelectric power plants and five thermoelectric power plants, the company met 65% of the Group’s energy demand in 2009.

Its objective is to make energy supply viable at competitive prices and with acceptable risk in order to guarantee the supply during periods of price uncertainty, and also to support the increasing demand due to the Group's growing operations. It is also responsible for contracting the natural gas used by the Companies, which enables the company to be more flexible and effective in its negotiations.

It also performs the following activities: management of the energy produced in the Group plants; allocation and control of the energy demand; creation and proposal of optimization measures; consultancy on matters related to the regulatory entities; and helping the Group's companies to analyze the viability of new energy sources.

With the aim of minimizing the impact of energy cost on the Group’s production facilities, in 2009 Votorantim Energia invested in several generation capacity projects. By year end, the Salto Pilão Hydroelectric Power Plant, in Santa Catarina State, went on stream, thus increasing  Votorantim’s generation capacity by 2.286 MW from 2.013 MW in the previous year and placing the Group among the third largest private energy generators in Brazil.

In early 2010, the Salto do Rio Verdinho Power Plant at Itarumã (Goiás State) went into operation. The new power plant has 93 MW of installed capacity and is wholly owned by the Group. Votorantim has three other power plant projects underway, currently undergoing environmental certification, which combined will total 209 MW of assured energy.
