The company’s leadership in primary aluminum in Brazil was consolidated in 2008 through the roll-out of 475,000 tons/year in the world’s largest integrated aluminum plant: CBA (Companhia Brasileira de Alumínio). The company expects to expand its capacity to produce 570,000 tons/year as of 2012. The company is also self-sufficient in bauxite production and generates approximately 70% of all the electrical power consumed in its industrial processes – well above the 26% world average.
In 2009, the aluminum business sought new opportunities outside Brazil with the Trinidad and Tobago project for construction of one of the lowest cost aluminum foundries worldwide. As an important input in the aluminum industry. the energy supplied at competitive costs represents a key differential factor for the project.
