Being the Latin American leader in metallic zinc production and one of the largest global producers of zinc metal, Votorantim Metals also stands out as a worldwide leader in the production of zinc oxide, and it is second in the global ranking of zinc powder production.
The metal has a wide range of applications: protection against corrosion and oxidation for the steel used in the automotive, home appliances, construction industries, energy and cellular telephone towers industries; and being used as an input in several sectors, such as rubber, chemical and electrochemical, agriculture, paints, pharmaceutical, food, and electronic components.
In 2010, the project designed to double production capacity of Cajamarquilla unit in Peru from 160 thousand to 320 thousand tons/year was completed. With production doubled, the unit now stands out among the largest zinc refineries in the world, placing VMZ among the top five market players, with a capacity exceeding 700 thousand tons/year. Last year, Votorantim acquired control of Milpo, one of Peru's largest mining companies, occupying 340 thousand hectares, of which only 40 thousand have been explored thus far. These comprise three polymetallic and two copper mines.
